Easter Eggs

My Easter eggs are done! (they were done a few days ago, but not enough time to show them off!) When I say “solution” i mean the “solution” is usually about 4 cups water, 4 cups chopped whatever (I used the whole onion, instead of just the skins) and then 2 tbsp vinegar. For the turmeric, I added 3 tbsp. And for the tea, I just added in 10 old tea bags. Then you boil for half an hour and it’s ready for the eggs. If you do a search for martha stewart’s eggs, dyed naturally, you’ll find full instructions. From clockwise around starting at the greenish one, and ending with the purple one in middle, they are:

  • Cold dipping for half an hour in turmeric and then less than a minute in cold red cabbage solution
  • Microwaved for turmeric solution for 5 minutes
  • Boiled with the beet solution… figured it’d be easier than boiling the beets and then straining and boiling with the egg it came out kinda speckled. I like it!
  • Soaked in onion solution for several hours
  • Soaked in strong tea solution for 3/4 of an hour
  • Soaked in leftover tea solution added to the onion solutions
  • Soaked in red cabbage solution for a few hours
  • Boiled in red cabbage solution for half an hour

Easter Eggs 08

I don’t think I’d do it again, mostly because of the mess, and the extra cost for the materials. If I did do it again, I think i’d stick with the red cabbage and the turmeric, because the whole red cabbage gives you about two batches, and they came out the best. (Not to mention mixing them works fine, and the total cost for everything comes out to about $4.)
